What Is A Sand Wedge?

A sand wedge is also known as a sand iron. This is one of the different types of golf clubs that can be used for sand bunkers. If you have unfortunately reached a sand bunk, this may be the best type of golf club to use. As compared to the other wedges, this is the widest and can usually provide the bounce that you need to get the ball out of the sand bunk in one easy swing. You may also use this wedge in order to avoid digging the ball further. Check out the different sand wedges when you click on this link.

History of the Sand Wedge

The invention of the sand wedge should be credited to Gene Sarazen. Basically, he invented a new type of club which caused him to win a lot of tournaments that he entered. The year was 1935. Even before his invention though, some manufacturers already created club designs that can be similar to the sand wedge.

The wedge that was created by the manufacturers had a concave face but according to the regulations that was set at that time, the concave faced wedges were not allowed to be used in the golf course. This has prompted Sarazen to create his own golf wedge with a flat face.

He also made some modifications with the smooth face of the golf wedge. He placed an extra lead and this has allowed the wedge that he made to glide through sand easily. His winnings made the club that he made more popular until people also wanted a wedge similar to what he had.

The Design of the Sand Wedge

It will be hard not to pay attention to the sand wedge’s design especially because it is the heaviest club in a golfer’s set. A lot of sand wedges weigh about 40 ounces or sometimes more depending on what you are going to purchase. I know that it has the shortest shaft especially when I look at all of my golf clubs. Mine is around 33 inches but some sand wedges can be up to 36 inches. It would depend on what your preference is. You can learn more details about how to use the sand wedge when you check this out:

Distinguishing Feature of the Sand Wedge

Aside from being the heaviest club and its unique design, you cannot help but wonder what makes it different from all the other clubs available. Basically, this has a feature called “bounce.” The edge of the club can easily remove the ball from the ground. This feature of the sand wedge can do the following:

  • It can give more momentum when used because it is heavy.
  • It prevents the club to dig deep into the sand which can cause the golf ball to be buried further. This makes removing the golf ball from the sand easier to do.
  • The sand wedge’s head can be buried in the sand in order to effectively remove the ball from underneath.

As the name implies, the sand wedge is mostly used when golfers’ balls are stuck in the sand wedge but some golfers also use it when they are dealing with mud. Some use it when the ground is still soggy because of the rain.
